Boca Raton Anxiety Treatment
Anxiety is the second most common mental health problem that individuals seek treatment for. You can have general anxiety characterized by a tendency to worry and obsess about almost anything or you can have specific kinds of worry like flying in airplanes, giving a talk in front of a large group of people or whether you will or won’t get that job you applied for. Not all worries and anxiety require treatment. However, when they are excessive and continue for more than a few weeks, it’s best to not ignore it.
Worry leads to more worry. It also leads to physical tension, tight muscles, rapid heart beat, sweaty palms, clenching or grinding your teeth, headaches, difficulty sleeping, rashes and skin conditions, stomach upsets, irritability and a host of other symptoms.
Many people cope by drinking alcohol or taking illegal drugs or over the counter remedies. This eventually creates a second problem on top of the first. At some point they contact a medical doctor who will usually write a script for a medication to “calm your nerves”. If your anxiety seems particularly high or you seem very bothered, you might get referred to a psychiatrist who, if you haven’t guessed yet, will likely write you another script! You may or may not feel better and might or might not have unpleasant side effects as part of the price you pay for a “quick fix”. It may also turn out that the medication by itself may not help or be enough. If you are feeling better, since you haven’t been helped to effectively deal with the source of you anxiety, you are now dependent on the drug. In most cases your anxiety was not caused by a chemical imbalance, but a life problem. Learning to cope with challenging people, times and situations is not a quick fix but a natural, healthier and more permanent solution.
Even if you seek out a psychologist or other mental health provider, there approach may fall short in significantly eliminating your anxiety. Without going into the short comings of many of the common approaches out there, let me focus on some of the more proven psychological treatments of anxiety. These approaches include cognitive behavior therapy, rational emotive behavior therapy, hypnosis, EMDR and yoga therapy.
Beyond the approach, the training and experience of the therapist goes a long way in determining a successful outcome.
