Dr. Robert Heller’s Mind-Body Newsletter
“Healthy Mind, Body and Spirit”
“Following a plant based diet; I have lost 33 pounds over the past 11 months, lowered my cholesterol, blood pressure and decreased my waist by five inches.”- Dr. Robert Heller
It wasn’t that hard and I don’t miss eating the way I used to very much. I eat this way 80-90% of the time. I eat out less, cook more and make healthier choices. I followed the program available at my local Whole Foods Market. I am no longer on my statin drug and I move fast on the tennis court! I have never been much of an “emotional eater”, but for those who may be, my book, “Weight Management” might be a helpful read before setting out to change your lifestyle and eating habits. (Available at www.cognitivetherapy.cc)
Yoga and Hypertension
Yoga may help to reduce hypertension as part of a holistic treatment program. Since certain poses are a contraindication for those with hypertension, in addition to checking with your doctor, you should consider having some private sessions with a YOGA THERAPIST, not a yoga instructor, before starting out. An excellent read in this area is Dr. Timothy McCall’s book, “Yoga As Medicine”.
It seems to me that spending 90 minutes in moving slowly with awareness while engaging in slow deep breaths is a great investment in your physical and mental health and well-being.
Psychology for Everyone
The Palm Beach County chapter of the Florida Psychological Association is initiating a major effort to educate the public about the benefits of seeing a psychologist. Free informational talks are being planned for the June convention in Palm Beach Gardens and plans are in the works to have a booth at green markets manned with psychologists along with informational flyers and brochures. A new website is being planned with consumer friendly information on a number of topics along with easy to access resources. Stay tuned for details.
Recent and Upcoming News and Events
My website, www.cognitivetherapy.cc has gotten a major facelift and is regularly having new content added to it.
I recently participated as an examiner for a candidate wish to become Board Certified in Cognitive Behavior Psychology. The three-hour exam was an interesting and challenging experience for the committee members and the candidate alike. (See my recent article on what it means to see a Board Certified Cognitive Behavior Psychologist).
I also participated in a presentation about Residential Treatment Programs for impaired professionals which highlighted a holistic approach to evaluating and treating addictions.
Over the summer, I will be attending a number of professional workshops and meetings locally and around the country to keep up with the latest and best methods to help my clients. In June, I will be attending the International Yoga Therapy Conference in Boston, and a special workshop relating to Sexual Issues in Women. In July, I will be attending the annual conference of the Florida Psychological Association.
The NBA playoffs and French Open will provide ample discussion on topics relating to peak performance for the next newsletter. I invite your comments and observations.
Until next month, be well.
